Ways to Volunteer
Rainbow Village is committed to making sure our volunteers are well-trained and oriented to our work before we put you into action. Our Community Engagement staff coordinates internally with staff to provide a seamless and rewarding experience for our volunteers.
Volunteering with Children and Youth
All volunteers who wish to serve directly with our children must first complete a volunteer application form, attend orientation, complete “Safe Guarding God’s Children” training, and pass a background check.
The Rainbow Village After School program provides academic development opportunities for K-12 students of our residents and graduates. This program operates during the school year, Monday – Friday from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm.
Children and youth services also provides positive youth development opportunities for K-12 students including: Character Building, Big Recess, Foreign Languages, and Music and Arts.
Character Building Classes
The children and youth character building program takes place on Tuesday evenings. Several community partner organizations and individual volunteers help facilitate programs aimed at building self-esteem, personal safety, physical fitness, financial planning and life skills. Volunteers are needed to assist with activities and to chaperone.
Big Recess is a weekly opportunity for the Children of Rainbow Village to play and have FUN. Volunteers provide support, supervision, and a variety of exciting activities. Big Recess occurs each Thursday at 7:00 pm.
We are actively recruiting for volunteers with skills in teaching Spanish, Music (keyboarding skills), and Arts. This opportunity is available for individuals who are able to commit monthly on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm-6pm.
Support our Staff and Programming
We can always use an extra pair of hands around the office to help with administrative duties, database management, answering phones, sending thank you notes, and more.
The clothing boutique serves as a resource for residents to have access to clothing that will help them dress and feel confident. Fashion and style are huge components of breaking the cycles of poverty, homelessness, and domestic violence by giving residents a fresh start. Volunteers typically assist in the following tasks:
- Collect Boutique Donations
- Wash, press, and organize clothing in a fashionable manner
- Update and maintain in season stock
Please contact the Community Engagement Specialist, Jo Tolliver to discuss scheduling options and more details of the opportunity.
Community Workdays & Service Projects
A Rainbow Village workday is a great way for business, community groups and faith-based organizations to volunteer together and give back. Please contact the Community Engagement team to discuss ways that you would like to serve in this capacity.
Community Partners provide Fellowship Meals weekly for Rainbow Village families on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in our Campus Community Center. Meals provide the chance for staff, residents, and the community to fellowship. Meals are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6PM- 7PM.
We are actively recruiting for volunteers to assist with kitchen set up and clean up on Thursday evenings. This opportunity is available for individuals who are able to commit for the 2016-17 school year.
Life Skills Classes
Every Tuesday and Thursday evening, our adult residents participate in the Life-Skills program. Classes focus on 5 key areas of self-sufficiency: workforce development, parenting, financial literacy, health/wellness and home management. Volunteers with experience and expertise in these areas are needed to facilitate classes.
Event Planning Support
Rainbow Village hosts several major events each year that help us with friend-raising and fundraising. Volunteers serve on event committees to support our Community Engagement staff in event planning, sponsorship solicitation, donation procurement, decorating, promotion and more. If you love to help with special events, this is a great fit for you!
Rainbow Village Advocates
We need volunteers to learn the facts and help dispel the myths about homelessness in our community. Rainbow Village Advocates are members of our Speakers Bureau that help by offering prepared presentations throughout our community that educate citizens about the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence. The more our community understands and engages in our mission to fight homelessness, the greater our impact will be.
