Dr. John Smith Chief Operations Officer

An honored veteran of the US Air Force, John brings operations and organizational management experience from a 30 year career working with and leading research and development teams in the communications industry.
In ministry, he has served as a pastor, counselor and chaplain with vocational emphasis on caring for persons in the midst of loss and suffering. This has included work with Peachtree Christian Hospice, Phillips State Prison, Anchorhold, Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church, Atlanta Medical Center, Trinity United Methodist Church, BASIC Ministries, and as a counselor with Rainbow Village. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Ministry Studies from Shorter University, a Master of Theological Studies degree from Emory University, and a doctorate from Columbia Theological Seminary that focused on education as means of pastoral care for marginalized groups.
Excited to return as our new Chief Operations Officer, John shares “It’s thrilling to be back here at Rainbow Village and have this opportunity to serve in such an amazing organization that is changing lives every day.” John’s passion for our mission, coupled with his savvy business acumen, will be invaluable as we grow and expand.
John is married to Karen Elizabeth Thornton Smith who teaches special education in Gwinnett County. Karen and John together enjoy everything associated with bicycling, listening to hi-fi, trips to the Georgia coast, going to yard sales (John sleeps in car while Karen shops) and “spoiling” their grandchildren.
