Rainbow Village Partners with Math is My Friend, Inc.
August 4, 2011
Rainbow Village is pleased to announce that we have formed a partnership with Math is My Friend, Inc. effective August 9 in order to prepare Rainbow Village children for achieving academic excellence during their stay in the program.
Many homeless children who join the Rainbow Village program are behind academically one-two grade levels. Specialized tutoring is offered daily at the after school program and within nine months most students are performing at or above grade level.
Rainbow Village CEO, Nancy Yancey, shares, “Rainbow Village wants to empower our children and youth to permanently break the cycles of homelessness, poverty and domestic violence. To do this, we have to ensure they are at appropriate academic levels for math that make them competitive in applying for college scholarships, higher future earnings upon graduation, and are ready to compete in today’s job market. We believe this partnership is part of the solution.”
Math Is My Friend CEO, Patricia Chambers, states, “Our program offers a unique combination of Math Trainers that care, access to tools for success, measurable goals, family inclusion and real world connections, that we believe, keeps the students engaged and successful.”
During the course of the school year, Rainbow Village students will work in small group sessions with math trainers, receive a netbook to keep upon completion of the program, be required to do on-line training during the week, and will have access to trainers during the after school program or from home on the weekends via phone. To help parents better understand the program provided to their children, parents workshops will be given to the parents to enable them to support their child’s math skills development. Rainbow Village Program Director Sondra Blue says, “the kids are thrilled to expand their knowledge of math in a fun way.”
