Board Highlight: Dave Fry
June 30, 2011
Name: Dave Fry
Profession: Pastor, Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church
Dave, who was your childhood hero?
My older brother.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
Believe it or not, a minister. Roy Rogers was already taken.
What do you do for fun?
Play Racquetball.
What was your first volunteer experience?
I always helped in my church growing up, but I would say my first ‘volunteer’ experience came when I was a teen. I volunteered for an organization called YoungLife. I went out to Colorado and served as a summer camp counselor. It was amazing.
Who is the person that most inspires you today?
Fred Craddock, a minister in Blue Ridge, GA. He was once named one of the 10 best preachers in America.
What motivates you?
At this stage in my life, wanting to make a difference for good in this world.
How did you first learn of Rainbow Village?
Kerri Peterson-Davis, an Associate Pastor on my staff, and I were talking one day about how I wanted the last decade of my career to really make a big impact on our local community. Kerri told me about Rainbow Village and introduced me to Nancy Yancey. The next thing I knew I was on the board and all in.
What’s been your favorite Rainbow Village moment to-date?
At one of the first Rainbow Village graduation ceremonies I attended, a 16 year old boy stood up and said, “My mom is the bravest woman in the world.” I didn’t hear another word spoken that day.
What advice do you have for Rainbow Village families?
Stay close to each other. What makes Rainbow Village so unique is the “community” we offer. The most powerful thing we give them is a community of encouragement.
